Airfare Tips: Flying Free

Merchant Tips: Why JetBlue Rocks

Best Low-Cost Airline: Jetblue Airways
Skeptics scoffed when JetBlue took off for the first time from its hub at New York's Kennedy Airport in February 2000. There had been too many stories of airlines soaring momentarily, then ending up in the increasingly large dustbin of failed airline start-ups.

But after three years of practical, well-thought-out expansion, and glowing reviews from passengers and the media, business travelers can't get their JetBlue tickets fast enough. Why? Because the airline offers just about everything a thrifty business traveler could want.

First, fares are low and simple to understand. Customer satisfaction levels are high because the airline flies only brand-new planes with assigned all-leather seats, which include in-seat DirecTV screens (broadcasting 24 channels live via satellite). It's also created a mod, easy-to-use Web site. JetBlue has created an air of "cheap chic" other airlines have found impossible to emulate.

The only downside is that JetBlue does not fly to more cities. Currently, it flies between 20 cities (mostly northeast corridor cities to and from Florida as well as to and from the West Coast) and is building a West Coast base at Long Beach Airport, 20 miles south of Los Angeles International Airport. Call (800) JETBLUE

The airline JetBlue ranked first this year in customer satisfaction among domestic carriers in many customer-service surveys. What keeps JetBlue patrons coming back? Cheap fares, your personal television, business-class leather seats, efficient boarding procedures, bubbly flight attendants - and, my personal favorite, free animal crackers.

As a frequent traveler, though, what pleases me the most is the company's fair-minded ticket cancellation and reissuing policy: If you have a ticket for a JetBlue flight and you need to change it, simply call before the flight takes off and they'll give you credit for the full amount of your ticket, which can be applied toward a future flight. When you find the flight you want (the credit is good for a year), simply pay a $25 change fee (they'll deduct it from the value of your ticket) and book your new itinerary.

But here's the best part: Your credit is completely transferable, so you can use it to purchase a ticket for someone else if you decide not to travel at all. (Become a member of the True Blue rewards program and you can do all of this online.)

It's clear that JetBlue has had an impact on the entire industry, and for the better. It's not just making its customers deliriously happy -- it's also turning a profit while the behemoth airlines take turns filing for bankruptcy and forcing their employees to take salary cuts.

Flight Secrets: Flying for free or nearly so
Courier Travel can get you a flight for almost nothing and sometimes even free! Due to increased security this option while still available isn't as prevelant as it used to be.

What Jetblue.com say's

Welcome aboard jetblue.com. We're very glad you're here. When we started JetBlue more than four years ago, we set out to bring humanity back to air travel and to make flying more enjoyable.

The challenges and skeptics were many. Critics scoffed at our dream of creating a successful low-fare airline based in New York City. They said we'd never find quality employees, that no one would want to fly domestically from JFK, and that we'd never be able to offer both low fares and a product that includes new planes, leather seats and live satellite tv with DIRECTV ® programming. Twenty-two million customers later, we're proud to be proving the critics wrong.

My Shopping Review - How user friendly is Jetblue.com?

Browsing is very easy via constant navigation menus. It takes very few clicks to get around the site.

The flight search feature works well. Flights can be searched by standard criteria, including origination, destination, departure date, return date, number of passengers, and roundtrip or one way. Key details such as price per segment, date, departure and arrival times, and flight number are shown for each flight listed.

Booking is a fairly straightforward process. Once flights are selected, customers can review the refund and cancellation policies before providing billing information. A status bar indicates where you are in the reservation process at all times; that's a nice feature. Once the reservation process is complete, customers receive an e-mail confirmation of their itinerary and a confirmation number. A fax confirmation may also be requested during the booking process. A seat selection can be made at this point with the help of a plane diagram. JetBlue Airways uses ticketless travel, so travelers only need to supply a confirmation number and picture identification upon check-in.
